Hello folks, I have a TEO PX-80 printer which is a lot like the EPSON MX-80 in terms of escape sequences it recognises. Anyway, during the Christmas holidays, I generated a printer driver that does *all* the First Word characters (the greek alphabet and math stuff and all). It does all the standard characters by simply printing them out, and the same goes for bold and underline and other escape sequences which my printer understands, but all the other "funny" characters are done by bit-image printing. It should be quite easy to modify the file for an Epson compatible printer, but if you have a completely different printer, this is the way to make designing the font easy. The technique I used required Degas (yes!), the manual for the BASIC and a convenient Unix system (optional). First, open the BASIC manual to page E-1, pages E-1 and E-2 show what the 8x8 font looks like on a grid. Next, start up Degas(TM) and chose "Define brush" option. This will present you with an 8x8 grid (!), simply use the mouse to click on and turn on and off the fat-pixels until you get the "up-arrow" ( (say).
