Some people reported having troubles when using more than a certain number of directories on their ST. This seems to be true and not true depending how one looks at it. I experimented around and found the following: You CAN have definitely more than 20 (or 40 depending which hard disk driver you are using) directories. This limitation applies only to directories which are 'seen' ( or 'active') by gemdos. This definitely allows you to have i.E. 10 directories in the root directory and 10 subdirectories in each of them ( = 101 directories). You just can't activate ( = list them, cd to them) all during the 'life' of your current TOS (failures are noticed by messages like: YOU CANT RUN THIS APPLICATION. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MEMORY) which means ->reboot. Above error messages prevent you from further using the current life operating system until reboot. But if one doesnt use windows ( AES and VDI ) at all one doesnt appear to have this problem. By not using VDI and AES one even can get almost 64kbyte more out of the memory (that seems to be the amount allocated by AES and VDI). How to do it? If you have a CLI (like command.prg) just put it in the AUTO directory of your BOOT disk and it comes up without VDI and AES plus more memory. If one does just compilation or other software development one doesn't need these parts of GEM. In the case of too many directories I have experienced that one just can't make new directories but everything else seems to work. If anyone else has different experience or something to add please share it with us here on the net.
