[net.micro.atari16] ? What text editing programs are available for STs?

RDROYA01@ULKYVX.BITNET (Robert Royar) (06/27/86)

I don't own an Atari, but a friend of mine has asked me about whether he
should buy an Atari-ST or some other computer for his work. He is a writer
and needs to be able to produce large documents easily. He is not, and does
not intend to become a programmer. My question is how much editing and
formatting software is already available? He would like an EMACS like
editor and a SCRIBE like formatter. The editor should support multiple
windows and buffers. It should use ASCII text, and not insert any funny
characters for its own purposes. I use Micro-Emacs on a micro, and we have
EMACS on our VAX. He would like something similar on whatever computer he
finally buys. How about ST users, is there a strong enough software base
yet for him to be satisfied?

Over here at usceast (the east coast campus of USC) we have recently made the
port of both emacs-3.6 and the public domain text formatter proff to the
ST-520.

Those of you that might like binary's should drop mail at this address
and if there is enough intrest I will post them. By the way, I have been
using the Micro C-Shell for some time now and those of you with an extra
dollar or two should give it a try ---- Just a satisfied customer.

Micro Emacs is great -- we are porting it to the world or what little left
there is.

				Good Luck
