[net.micro.atari16] wysiwyg text processor

richa@tekred.UUCP (Rich Amber ) (07/07/86)

I have been searching for a good word processor for my 520ST ever
since I got it. I have spent good money on a lot of poor word
processors that made big promises on the package and couldn't
back that up once the disk was slipped in the drive. 1st_Word
is missing a lot (only one font). Regency promised that would be
different, but didn't explain until I ripped the package open that
I must have a certain type of printer to get different fonts and
the stupid program works like a unix editor.

Listen folks, my request is simple. I want a word processor for
my ST that works like MacWrite. I want to see, on the screen, what
my text file looks like. And I want to be able to change sizes and
fonts independantly of other hardware. If it's already out there,
I haven't found it and would be afraid to put my dollars on the line
without a review. If it's not out there, why not? You software
guys are hurting this machine by selling it short with crappy
programs. I NEED this capability. Must I trade my ST for a Mac?

The reason that the ST hasn't in general supported multiple fonts (except for some
"special" programs that have been floating around) is that the portion of GEM for the
68000 (GDOS) hasn't had a production release yet. One company, MiGraph, is shipping
a preliminary version with their EZ-Draw package, but most companies are waiting for
the final version.

A final release of GDOS is supposed to happen "any day now" according to what I've seen
in messages on the Compuserve Atari Developers sig. Products using it would come out
a few months afterwards. I know of at least three wysiwyg text processors that are
scheduled to come out in the third quarter of this year, in anticipation of the
GDOS release.
