[net.micro.atari16] A 520ST that resets itself?

gjphw@mhuxo.UUCP (WYANT) (07/21/86)

We have been seeing an unusual problem with our Atari 520ST lately that
someone may know about. Our 520ST has been upgraded by the dealer to
1 Mb and TOS in ROM. We also have a double sided disk drive rather than
 the standard single sided drive.

For certain disks, the console appears to reset itself while reading a
disk. This reset is equivalent to manually depressing the reset button on the
back of the console (i.e., the monitor blinks and the disk drive begins
reading the disk again). I have not yet established any pattern to this
problem. It happens on some copy protected game disks and on disks with TOS
files (e.g., the TOS disk). This problem is intermittent, and since it
doesn't happen consistently, I suspect the problem is mechanical (disk drive
timing, crossed wiring in the console). How could poor drive timing cause the
 console to reset itself?

Any suggestions? Email would be appreciated. Thank you.

My 1040STf also sometimes blinks and reboots. This happens only during the
booting phase, usually upon finishing with what's in the 'auto' folder and
before the desktop appears. And only sometimes. Is something wrong with my
hardware? (BTW - is there any way to control the order in which programs
in the auto folder get executed?)

The order that auto programs get executed is simply the order that they are
placed in the auto folder. I.e., the first program you copy into the auto
folder will be the first one executed (until you delete that program, natch).

Disclaimer -- my humble opinions are not worthy of disclaimers. Besides,
they're absolutely RIGHT!

My 1040STf behaves the same way. I wonder too. Maybe we both have
a bad auto program. I don't remember the details, but my auto
folder contains a clock setting program (currently a freebee from
Batteries Included, previously some other freebee).

I suspect that the order the .prg files are found in the auto folder
control the order in which they are executed. This order is hard to
observe or control. Here is my recipe:
	- remove all files from the auto folder
	- add the .prg files back in the order you want them executed
