[net.micro.atari16] environments?

dobbs@marlin.UUCP (Lynn B. Dobbs) (07/19/86)

I recently downloaded hack for the ST from net.sources.games. Unfortunately,
my 13 year old daughter is now on my back because she can't get below level 3.

The problem is the version of hack that was posted requires double sided
disk drives. I only have two single sided drives. There is a cure for this
listed in the README file of hack, but it requires a file that ends with
.env This is supposed to set an environment variable to allow for two single
sided drives. Hack didn't come with this file.

Is it part of a shell program or just something I missed? I really don't
want to buy a d/s drive just to get Heather off my back :-)

The Navy -- not just a job. its an adventure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ lineater, \~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
my son came up with another solution, once the program is loaded and running
just put in a different disk (your 'library' disk) and use that to store the
level info etc., he claims that it works fine
The file should be called  HACK.ENV  and contains option strings that would
normally be set outside the program, in a Unix environment.  The particular
option you want is   HACKDIR=B:
This sets the 'playground' to your second drive.  Your A: drive would have
hack.prg, hack.env and record.  The B: drive contains all the other files;
help, hh, rumors, etc.  The problem won't actually go away; it'll rear its
ugly head at some later date.  I guess you'll get to about level 20, with
a winning game, it'll fail on saving the level, and it'll totally blow away
any possibility of recovery :-) :-)
