The local computer shop up hear (Lafayette,IN) has a rumor that Toy'R'Us in Indianapolis is selling ST's (Mono, 520, 1 SS drive) for $399. I've heard NOTHING to confirm this, but a quick call to your local Toy'R'Us couldn't hurt. --Dwight Mckay, ECN Text & Workstation Software Support [arpanet: mckay@ee.ecn.purdue.edu, usenet: ...ihnp4!pur-ee!mckay] [Compu-serve: 75776,1521, office: EE 348B, phone: (317) 494-3561]

I called Toys Ya Us (the middle letter is the Cyrillic Ya, not an R - must be a Russkie operation) in Framingham, MA ((617) 872-6242) and learned that, alas, $399 buys you only a cpu/keyboard and a mouse. Certainly not a monitor and I believe not even a disk drive. Either way, $499 for a full system is still the best price I have heard confirmed (e.g. CompuClub in Framingham or 47th Street Whatever). The good news is that Toys Ya Us is back into selling Atari products, including the 800XL at $69.95 with a considerable quantity left to sell. If we all express interest and remind them of the $499 package price for the monochrome system maybe they will match it. -John Sangster jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa

I checked our local Toys'R'Us recently. They were selling ST's for $399 alright, JUST ST's, i.e., the cpu/keyboard. You have to get the monitor and diskdrive separate. However, the combined price comes out to $959, which is less than the standard $999 (which I paid). Also, they are only selling (at least here in Austin) 520 ST's, single sided drives, color screens, and VERY little software. On the same subject, there's a software store that started carrying the ST here in Austin, at the standard prices. But during a computer fair here, they had a show special. Instead of the usual $799 for a monochrome system with one single sided disk, they had 'em for $599! What a deal! Buy one of them, then buy a color monitor separate, and for less than the price of a color system, you get a 520 with both monitors. So, if you keep on the lookout, I bet you can find some great deals. Maurice T. The whole setup will cost you close to list price. Not a very good deal. I have seen a couple of places offering the SS ST mono setup for under $500 but all offers ended July 15. Sorry...
