Many thanks to all of those who wrote back about my problem getting the avatek 1200 to dial long distance numbers! John Sangster correctly identified the problem as me. What was happening was the following. I would let the avatek pulse dial the number a few times and get back the no carrier message. I would dial the number myself and get the modem tone and then decide to listen in the next time the modem called. What I heard was a warning from the phone company that I had misdialed. I wasn't aware that pulse dial phones will not dial if one is off the hook. So the bottom line is that when the modem placed the first few calls it got a busy signal. I immediately assumed the worse possible scenario and convinced myself the modem wasn't working. Not so, it works like a charm and I finally got through to the bbs at 2:00am. Now my only problem is staying awake so I can get through to these busy systems. So my avatek works like a charm and based on my experience I reccommend it heartily. peter lorraine (qbzj@cornella)
