[net.micro.atari16] Summary for mod.atari16.sources

peterb@applicon.UUCP (08/10/86)

--

Well from all of the voting going on over the last
two weeks, I have 40 yes votes, and no negatives. Some votes state that
the vote is a summation for other people at that site. An interesting aspect
is that about 5 or so votes come from across the atlantic.

The following are the actual votes that I have accumulated over the last
two weeks. I think that we have enough to start the newsgroup
mod.atari16.sources so could someone out there (read spaf@gatech)
create the group for me??? The prime motivation is to prevent the Hack
reposting disaster in net.sources.games.

Hope to read a newgroup message soon for mod.atari16.sources...

From: raybed2!linus!philabs!princeton!pupthy!wrs (William R. Somsky)

I'm in favor of a moderated Atari 520/1040ST source group.
(I may even have some worthwhile contributions once I get a compiler.)

From: raybed2!linus!decvax!trwrb!sansom (Richard Sansom)

Am I in favor of a new moderated ST newsgroup?

                   Yes [x]
                    No [ ]

If I answered "Yes", which of the following names do I prefer?

     mod.520st.sources [ ]
             mod.520st [ ]
        mod.st.sources [ ]
                mod.st [x]

So, its time for a vote, you want a moderated atari 520st source
newsgroup??? Send me mail, I'll sum to the net in a week to two.

Sounds good to me.

From: raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!c3pe!charles

Yes!
(Even though I don't *have* an ST, just a 'lowly' 800XL (well, all right, two)).

You *might* want to name it mod.atari16.sources, though, to be "compatible"
with the existing net.micro.atari{8,16} dichotomy.

From: raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!mnetor!utfyzx!harrison

Yes please, and thanks very much for volunteering. The ProGem
stuff that bammi has been occasionaly putting in micro.atari16
has been really helpful, but complete working programs are
not only useful in their own right but indicate how to write
similar programs when the Developer's doc etc. is just too
obscure.

From: <raybed2!linus!ll-xn!seismo!mcvax!ukc!sjl>

This would be nice. Personally I would prefer the binary rather than
the source because,

	(a) I am lazy and don't want to compile programs unnecesarily.
On an unexpanded 520 + ss drive this can take quite
		some time!

	(b) to avoid the problems of programs I want that use compilers
or languages I don't have (mainly modula2 and pascal).

But if all else fails, send sources by all means!

From: raybed2!linus!ll-xn!seismo!mcvax!nikhefh!u14 (Daan Josephus Jitta)

I support the idea of a moderated news group devoted to the Atari ST serie.
In the organisation I'm working for, there is a quick growing community of ST
owners. You can regard this single article as subscribed by another 10 happy
ST owners.

BTW: I am looking for the sources of the make-utility posted to
net.micro.atari16 at the end of april '86. Can you -if you have it-
email it to me or *perhaps better* post it to net.micro.atari16 or
mod.computers.st (???) so other people can use it to?

From: Skip Montanaro <raybed2!linus!cca!harvard!rochester!steinmetz!montnaro>

Peter,

I agree that there should be a moderated ATARI ST group. But are 520s and
1040s so different that they should be separate? I don't own either. I'm
just an interested observer.

From: raybed2!linus!ihnp4!hoptoad!curt (Curt Mayer)

i think that the name sucks. how about mod.sources.st or mod.sources.atari16 ?
nevertheless, i vote yes.

From: raybed2!linus!decvax!cwruecmp!bammi (Jwahar R. Bammi)

Sound like a good idea. Please could you post some alternate paths to
you also, and also Csnet/Arpa addresses to your site if you have them.
That will certainly make it easier to get things over to you.

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!ll-xn!lll-crg!ptsfa!jmc

Fine with me but the name should be something like mod.sources.atari16
(or some such --- whatever keeps the name from being obsolete for new
models is ok).

From: <raybed2!linus!cca!caip!watmath!looking!david>

I vote an enthusiastic YES !

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!rochester!rocksanne!sunybcs!mesches (Scott Mesches)

I'm all for it, but I don't have a compiler 8-(
what are the chances of a mod.binary.atari520

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!rochester!rocksanne!sunybcs!leo (Leo Wilson)

Heck, yeah, GO FOR IT!

From: George Walker <raybed2!linus!decvax!tektronix!tekig4.TEK.COM!georgew>

Yes, I'd like to see a moderated group. I suggest mod.st, with a
subdirectory for sources. It would be nice to have someone we could
mail to to coordinate things like putting together a list of where the
users groups are, etc., since Neil@Atari doesn't have time.

From: Andrew Smith <applicon!raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!mcvax!kcl-cs!andrew>

My vote is YES to mod.sources.atari520ST or whatever !

From: Alun Jenkins <applicon!raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!mcvax!kcl-cs!agjenkin>

One yes vote from me !

From: <raybed2!linus!ll-xn!seismo!mcvax!kbsc!yorick>

I vote YES!!

From: Guy Sirton <raybed2!linus!ll-xn!WEIZMANN!cmcl2!MLSIRTON>

Hi!

Sounds great!
How about mod.520st.binaries?

From: raybed2!linus!ll-xn!cmcl2!TPC862@ESTEC.BITNET

Yes, you have my vote. Only one concern.
I am on BITNET and can follow the info-atari16 because there is a
mirror between usenet and arpa. Will there be such a thing for this
newsgroup ? Or will archives be accessible via a mailserver ? We cannot
FTP through gateways from BITNET. Thanks for the info.

From: <raybed2!linus!ll-xn!rochester!kodak!ektools!bruce>

I vote wholeheartedly yes for a moderated newsgroup of this sort.
After all, the amiga guys got one. Shouldn't the name be mod.sources.
{atari16,atari520,atari-st} instead of the system name being in the
middle?

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!ll-xn!lll-crg!ptsfa!jmc

Fine with me but the name should be something like mod.sources.atari16
(or some such --- whatever keeps the name from being obsolete for new
models is ok).

From: topaz.RUTGERS.EDU!appelbau

Yes!!! A 520 sources groups would be great!!

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!cca!topaz!appelbau (Marc Appelbaum)

I don't have an St yet, but I think it is a very good idea, so I vote
YES....

From: Lynn B. Dobbs <applicon!raybed2!linus!ll-xn!s3sun!sdcsvax!marlin.Nosc.ARPA!noscvax!dobbs>

I really don't care what you call it :-), butr by all means start it.
There are several ST owners at this location and I am sure we would all e
interested.

Thanks

From: applicon!raybed2!linus!ll-xn!seismo!NLM-VAX.arpa!randy (Rand Huntzinger)

Sounds good to me, I vote yes.

From: Heinz Kindlimann <raybed2!linus!philabs!seismo!mcvax!ethz!kindlima>

I really would like to see a news group for atari 520ST sources.
Perhaps it is also possible to run it as a mailing list.
Also a good idea would be an archive that is accessible in an
automatic way (for people who missed a part).

Thank you for volunteering.

From: Andrew Smith <raybed2!linus!ll-xn!seismo!mcvax!kcl-cs!andrew>

I vote YES for this new news group. Would it be possible for you to post
BB board stuff (from Atari etc.). as we in Europe have no chance of receiving
this sort of stuff over here.
