ACS19@UHUPVM1.BITNET (Mike V.) (08/29/86)
I have finally, after many attempts, received a uuencoded file thru BITNET which I could uudecode and run. Who is the lucky person who accomplished such a monumental action? Simon Poole. Thank you Simon for wonderful foresight and understanding of the problem with uuencoded programs. The problem? Others may ask. Yes, the problem I experience (due to some gateway) is two: 1) Tab expansion. None of the proff files I receive ever shell correctly due to this problem. 2) IBM machines love to pad lines to 80 columns. What does this mean? This means that uuencoded programs having trailing spaces added (which I remove when I receive them on the 3B20) do not uudecode correctly. Nor do the ones with the spaces left on. Not until Simon hit upon the key. Solution: add an extra letter at the end of every line in a uuencoded file sent over BITNET, to insure that the contents are not altered. BRAVO!! BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!!! I can only too heartily recommend that everyone who sends files should adopt this method. Ah yes, and now his program... I like it very much. It is excellent public domain software, as it is now. If he were to market it, the program would certainly have a place, seeing that ansigraf is like it, and does not really have all the same features. Again, thank you Simon. Mike V.
