I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, and I'm hoping that there are some R&B fans out there who can help me. I was reminded of this when someone mentioned, in a listing of what he considered "classic" albums, the Al Kooper/ Mike Bloomfield/Steve Stills album, SUPER SESSION. Anyways, about the same time, Kooper did another album called KOOPER SESSION, which "introduced" guitarist Shuggie Otis, the then 15-year-old son of R&B jack-of-all-trades, Johnny Otis. The liner notes on the record mention that Shuggie Otis first appeared on an album by the Johnny Otis Show called COLD SHOT from Kent Records, and that he'd recently (then) been signed by Epic Records. I picked up this album (KOOPER SESSION) in a cut-out bin about 5-6 years ago, and hadn't come across Shuggie's name again until a few months ago. At that time, I found a relatively recent Bo Diddley album (WHERE IT ALL BEGAN, Belle- phon Records) on which Shuggie played second guitar on one cut (and incidental- ly, father Johnny plays drums on another cut). The credits list the two Otis's as appearing courtesy of Epic Records. The owner of the store, who's an R&B fan, remembered Shuggie from the Kooper album when I pointed out the credit on the Diddley, but couldn't recall that he'd seen him show up anywhere else until I pointed out the credit. So, what I need to know is: What has Shuggie Otis (or Johnny Otis, for that matter) done for Epic? And can anyone supply a Shuggie/Johnny Otis discography? Or point me to a source that might tell me? Note: My netnews reading is spotty enough that I may likely miss a posting that answers my questions, so PLEASE answer via mail at the address below. If there are any responses, I will summarize to net.music. --- jayembee (Jerry Boyajian, DEC, Maynard, MA) UUCP: {decvax|ihnp4|allegra|ucbvax|...}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-akov68!boyajian ARPA: boyajian%akov68.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA
