I can't quote the passage, but somewhere in the latest (Fall) STart mag, BI fellow mentions that there is some kind of problem with the backspace key in 1ST WORD and Thunder; he said that there is an option in Thunder you can disable...oops, found it: page 95, "Developer's Notepook: Transportable GEM (IBM to ST)," Mark Skapinker. "The newer versions of 1ST Word do not allow the Backspace key to buffer characters....This caused problems in the speed that Thunder! deleted characters..."
