[net.micro.atari16] Future of GEM

Wayne%OZ.AI.MIT.EDU@XX.LCS.MIT.EDU (Wayne McGuire) (09/13/86)

Does anyone have any hard information or informed speculations about the
future of GEM? Specifically, is there a multitasking GEM in the works which
will fully exploit the resources of 68020 machines? I am sure most of us
would love to see many of the best features of the windowing and operating
systems of Symbolics, Sun, Apollo, MicroVAX, and Xerox 6085 workstations
integrated into a GEM or GEMlike interface on the next generation of Atari
machines.

Also, will it be possible to run Windows with the new IBM PC emulator for
the Atari, and, if so, might not Windows and eventually MS-DOS 5.0 become
the operating system of choice for Atari users and programmers?

i doubt it severly, what is more likely is a port of system V with
a windowing system on top of it, there is a company that sells a
multi-processing OS for the ST but with no memory protection and
thats kinda like driving without a seatbelt.
