[net.micro.atari16] avatex modems 1200, 1200hc

I just saw a note on a local BBS that NITE LITE Systems, who sells a
well-known BBS for the Atari computers, is selling the new fully Hayes
compatible 1200-baud modem (Model 1200HC) for $149.95 for a limited time.
The offer expires this Friday, Sept. 19. They also have the older Model 1200
(partly Hayes compatible) unit for $84.95.

Their address is NITE LITE SYSTEMS, P.O. Drawer "R", Billerica MA 01821.
They also run one of their own home grown BBS systems, now on an ST, by the
way, at (617) 663-4221. The SYSOP and proprietor of NLS is Paul Swanson.

The NITE LITE BBS has been around awhile for the 8-bit Ataris, but ST owners
may be interested to know that an ST version is available. Info on this
product is available on the BBS mentioned above, also. In particular, callers
get to try it out from the remote end!

On the subject of Avatex modems, I had the oppurtunity to try the 1200hc
modem. It is a far better modem in my estimation as it:
	1) Has a speaker
	2) Is Hayes compatible.

The one thing I noticed is that it seems slower than other modems. I also
have access to the Everex Evercom II internal 300/1200 baud modem, which seems
noticably faster than the external Avatex.

Can anyone confirm this? Is it possible to have two modems that are 1200 baud
operate at DIFFERENT speeds?

Is the answer to this going to be like 200 cps printers (most of which are
about 130-150 cps printers)?

Also, anyone tried the 2400-baud Leading Edge modem that sells here (on the
beach) for $289?

Hang loose,
