[net.micro.atari16] 520 purchase questions

moore@NCSC.ARPA (Moore) (09/16/86)

I've finally decided to buy a 520ST, but first I'd like someone to assuage
(whoa!) my doubts about one thing: what is the likelihood that, with the
widespread availability of the 1040 and the imminent release of a TT (or
whatever you want to call it), the poor little 520 will be left by the wayside?
I've already run across a couple of programs that say "1Meg recommended."
Will that soon become "1 Meg required"?

Ditto about the single-side drive: I'm buying the cheapest system I can (the
monochrome, 1SS drive from 47th St Photo), because it's all I can afford. Will
software continue to be available on SS disks? (When was the last time you
got a disk for an IBM PC that was single sided?) And, about the price, does
anyone have comments about the $495 package from 47th?

Thanks for letting me ask these questions. I appreciate any comments.

Jim:

$495 for a 520ST is a heck of a bargain! I'm glad to know that at least one
place is still offering the price.

Re: 1M - You can have your 520ST upgraded to 1Mbyte of memory for around $140
to $150 by several places. The upgrade appears to work fine if done carefully
except that some power supply units don't work right with the added drain and
require replacement of the power supply or a choke in series with it on the
board. Professional upgrades usually involve changing the choke also.

Good luck. You can't go wrong for $495 and you can upgrade later.
