This weekend I was able to drag a 'real' MacIntosh home and hook it up to my Atari. Although I was able to transfer a lot of data between the machines using Kermit, I was unable to successfully use the Magic Sac 'transmit' program to move data between the machines. The typical result was that both sides would start up correctly, the Macintosh side would reach the 'Waiting for the ST' prompt, and the Atari side would count backwards 987654321 and never get to the 0. This would always happened on the first transfer, except for once when I managed to transfer an entire diskette, which however turned out to be unusable. Current status: 1) transmit program doesn't work with either Macintosh or Lisa 2) known bug in kernel prevents telecommunications programs from working 3) bug in Apple code prevents single drive systems from doing disk to disk copies. I haven't tried to call Data Pacific again, and I haven't received an updated diskette from them, nor have I heard anything at all back from Alex Leavens about new copies of the diskettes I bought from him. I would appreciate hearing from ANYONE who has had success with the transmit program; it's still posssible that my problem was with a bad copy of the utility.

I know someone who has had no real problems transferring disks from a a 128K Mac to an ST. The last letter I got mentioned that the transfer program has had some problems running on a Mac Plus, and that they now had an update available to people who needed it. Also, the latest update (version 2) does seem to handle the serial port correctly; "freeterm" 1.8 seems to run fine. dgc
