[net.micro.atari16] URGENT>>>>>>>CAUSE OF ALL THESE PROBLEMS FOUND<<<<<<<<<<<<

K538915@CZHRZU1A.BITNET (10/11/86)

So, Ive just got the part 5 of my posting of UniTerm back from info-atari16.
No wonder it didn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Somebody is changing [ (left square bracket) to (backslash) and
] (right square bracket) to ! (exclamation mark).

Find that computer and shoot it....
Until then, will everybody refrain from posting uuencoded binarys!!!!!!

This is a feature of some versions of the *BITNET* software running on IBM
systems. The problem being the the EBCDIC code never has had consistant
translations between the characters on printers, keypunches, displays and
their ascii equivalents. This resultes in a 'correct' translation and a
'useful' translation. YEECH!!!

If you are using a IBM system, you are screwed. If you're on a ascii flavor
unix system, then you can arrange to have articles posted locally uucp'ed to
a backbone or other non-ibm site. Many sites will accept postings through
rnews or rnmail even though they can't accomodate extra feeds.

The alternative is to send a diskette to some cooperative soul with better
connections or upload your program to the Atari BBS and just mention that
it's there...

That is definitely an IBM computer that is doing it. EBCDIC does not
have '[' and ']' in the character set. Don't shoot
the computer, shoot IBM. Now we know what is at the root of all these
problems. BRAIN DAMAGED IBM MACHINES (once again!!).

May i make a suggestion. Lets drop UUENCODE and adopt BinHex. There is a
good reason why people in the Mac world use it. Even IBM computers can
handle the characters 'A'...'F'. If there is enough interest i will
post the source for BinHex here.
