your point is well taken but allow me to play devil's advocate...

1) the question of size and cost doesn't need restating, the sources for 
emacs are about 400K

2) not everybody has the same compilers, but we all have ST's

3) for evolving programs like emacs and others, posting the sources
is an open invitation to chaos, it guarentees that there will be almost
as many versions of the program as there are people with good ideas
making the introduction of new versions a nightmare
