[net.micro.atari16] UNITERM

K538915@CZHRZU1A.BITNET (09/01/86)

To all who have sent mail to me, I will anwser it! I've just forgot how to
send mail to UUCP, as soon as I have figured it out again, I'll answer your
requests.

We got parts 1,2,3 and 4 of Uniterm here during the dates Aug. 29-31
but never got part 5, part 'C' of the uuencoded binary. Could someone
send me the missing part? The docs look good. (Damn! *I* wanted to
do a 4105 emulator as a project! :-) :-) :-))

Thanks to everybody who sent me comments or requests for UniTerm, a few
nasty bugs have turned up during the last three weeks (due mostly to me
not having a test program (I've got one now)) most of them are already fixed
(GINMode, Tabs etc.). I will send a updated copy to everyone who has already
sent me a message sometime this or next week (I'm really on holidays).

I've finished the updated Version of Uniterm, bug fixes include:
             - VT102 insert line and delete line work correctly now
             - shifted function keys work (this was due to a mistake
in ST Internals Data Becker / Abacus, the shifted function
keys generate different key codes than the non shifted ones)
             - GIN mode really works now
             - Tek command decoding has been fixed, probably nobody
               noticed it anyway
             - repeated use of RESET TERMINAL doesn't cause a Stack overruns
Heap message anymore (this was due to a bug in the Delete_
               Dialog call of CCD/OSS Pascal)
             - Tab works correctly now
changes from Version 1.2 include
             - SLE buffer now 20 lines large
             - GS received in VT102/VT100 mode sets the mode to tek alpha mode
and UniTerm stays in Tek mode until switched manually
               back
enhancments include:
             - VT52 mode
             - a bit of Pericom compatability

I've just got one problem: shall I post it to the whole net or not? Consider
following facts:
             - I probaly already made the UUCP top 25 poster's list last time
and I hate thinking of all those large telphone bills
             - I've got something like 40-50 requests for the updated
               version
             - I have a lot of trouble sending anything to sites which are
not on BITNET or arpanet, typically I can't get through
to the site I want to on 9 out of ten trys (maybe someone
could tell me what I doing wrong?)
Any comments? Could someone give a estimate on how many people get this mail?
How much does it cost?

Just a quick question...sorry if it was asked before. Will the
new release of UNITERM support color monitors?

I received Uniterm, I linked the files together, I uudecoded it, I got the
exact size it should be... The program does not run correctly. If there is no
resource, it says no resource, bye bye, otherwise if there is a resource, the
bee disappears and the program stops, no bombs no nothing, just a green screen
with uniterm.prg at the top in t he menu bar region.

Anyone else have this problem, or has anyone gotten it to run?

I also tried the new version of UNITERM. The decoded length was correct, but
when I ran the program, I got 4 bombs, then back to GEM, which seems to be
running OK (this message is coming to you through the vt52 emulator, post-
UNITERM failure). If it is relevant, my system is a 1040STf with color.

Any suggestions?

After I concatenated parts 3, 4, 5, and 6, I uudecoded it. The length of the
final version is shorter than specified by the owner of Uniterm. Can someone
tell me what I did wrong?
   Your help is appreciated.

I'm afraid I got the same results. All the files came out to be the right
size after splicing and uudecoding. Uploaded using xmodem. Uniterm.prg
did two different things: First, it loaded, gave the little beginning menu,
then asked what buffer size I wanted. No matter which size I chose, it would
promptly bomb. Second: I rebooted (just in case it was my ST's fault; my RAM
disk has been known to screw up memory), at which point uniterm.prg bombs as
soon as it loads. Keyedit.prg loads and appears to run, but I don't really
know how to use it well enough to test it (besides, I think I need Uniterm to
properly test it, no?).

So, did someone get uniterm to work? Are others having trouble? I'm mailing
to Simon, just in case he misses this posting. However, if you do have a
working copy, PLEASE do NOT repost it. Let the original poster handle this,
so we don't have a repeat of the Hack reposting (where it was properly reposted
and then the next day someone comes along and is 'nice' enough to repost it for
everyone all over again.)

                                Thanks,

The latest posting of UniTerm works fine -- thanx a lot, Simon. I also like
the ARC program; it makes downloading easier since the files are (a) collated
into one file, and (b) compressed.

I have a question about a weird bug(?) that seems related to UniTerm. When I
use UniTerm to connect to a remote machine, I can't use Kermit to Send files
from my Atari to the remote machine. I can Get files all right, and I can
Send files using the same Kermit if I use any other terminal emulator. But
if I've used UniTerm in a particular session, then even if I use another
emulator without resetting the Atari, this bug appears. What happens is that
somewhere between 1500 and 2000 bytes of the file get sent, after which
Kermit hangs and eventually times out. I can see it sending some sort of
signal periodically, but the remote Kermit doesn't seem to respond, not even
to a Quit request. The only way to kill the remote Kermit is to connect to
the remote machine, hit a control-Q (upon which I get several error messages
from the remote Kermit), undo back to my Kermit, try Quit again (resulting in
an "unexpected packet type" message), and finally do Quit again (which brings
everything back to normal). This always happens if (and only if) I have used
UniTerm to connect to any remote machine before using Kermit.

However, I can use UniTerm to do everything else, such as run a display
editor on the remote machine, and even Get files using Kermit; it's only Send
that dies.

I suspect what is happening is that UniTerm is redefining some obscure RS232
parameter that no-one else cares about, or perhaps it is redefining something
that causes a particular control character to get swallowed up or changed
(the character being one that Kermit in one of its protocol sequences). The
effect of whatever UniTerm is doing lasts even after it has been exited.

I don't know enough about UniTerm or Kermit's protocols to figure out why
this is happening. If anyone has any suggestions, please mail them to me.
So far I've been using the Emulator accessory to transfer files and UniTerm
for everything else, and I would love to get this straightened out so that I
can use UniTerm and nothing but.

Thanx a lot -- Ashwin Ram.

When Uniterm was originally posted, our site only received the last two
parts. I figured I wasn't missing much, so didn't say anything. But in
light of all the recent praise of it, I would appreciate it if somebody
could send me a copy of it or possibly tell me where I can rcp it from.
Thanks in advance.

Did anyone in the UK get a working copy of UNITERM? I'm told that it
was distributed in 4 parts, but we saw none of these. If anyone has it
and would be willing to send it to me, could they please let me know by
mail? Did this program, which everyone says is very good, actually reach
Europe or the UK?

PS.
Apologies to those outside Europe, to whom this may not be
very interesting.

I *think* I have finally managed to collect all the bits. I got the
README and parts b and a from a 'second-source'. (I already had c.)
The part b I just got matches the part b I'd already had, so I'm hoping that
I've now got the full set. However, I haven't ported it onto my ST and
uudecoded/de-arced it yet. If I can find a JANET path from UK.AC.AUCC to
your machine, I'll try to mail it to you, unless I hear rather quicly that
you'd as soon not be the guinea-pig.

Anyone else in the UK who is accesible to JANET mail, and in a similar situation, send me mail ***AT MY PRIMARY MACHINE*** (poor connectivity). E-mail address
for there is:

   Smee at UK.AC.AUCC

(In theory, I can also get at ARPA via UCL-CS gateway, and at BITNET via RL.EARN
gateway, but I haven't been terribly successful at those. Still, if anyone
wants to try to establish a mail path between me (at AUCC) and somewhere on
those nets, I'll be happy to give that a try as well...)
