The Nial Project - a Review by M. A. Jenkins of Computing & Information Science Queen's University Abstract The Nial Project began in 1979 as a test bed for Trenchard More's theory of nested array data structures within IBM. During the 80's it developed into a large programming language design, im- plementation and application project centered at Queen's, but with active groups at the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Alberta and MIT. The project has resulted in a programming system, called Q'Nial that is in use at over 250 lo- cations in 15 countries. The talk will review the current state of Nial, describe what has been accomplished by the project, and discuss future directions for Nial-related research.
