Not to flame you, Paul (I agree with your rebuttal to Palena wholeheartedly),
but although I've liked some of the music from "The Wall", I can't help but
think that as a whole it is a ridiculously self-indulgent egotistical
whining exercise on the part of Roger Waters. I recall reading his
insistence at the time of the recording of "The Wall" that HE *was* Pink
Floyd, that the band was his ideas, his vision, his music. The whole theme and
content seemed symptomatic of the whiny "singer-songwriter" motif wherein
the singer talks about his incredible problems in life and blames them
all on the other people around him (often MOTOS's). (Reminds me a bit
of the ethic in John Parr's "Naughty Naughty" video---when someone doesn't
do what I want, they're at fault, and a happy ending would have them "giving
in" in the end; just one example from MTV.)

Didn't he go through a divorce around this time? I ask because two of the
biggest "stars" of the moment, Phil Collins and Sting, bolstered their careers
(and found something to write about endlessly) as a result of divorce, and
seem to fit into that same category. Sting recanted "Every Little Thing She
Does Is Magic" with "Every Breath You Take" (both about his ex-wife). He
later claimed that "If You Love Someone Set Them Free" was his own answer to
"EBYT". Yet if you think about it, he wasn't offering to "set free" the one
he had been watching who belonged to him in "EBYT", he was demanding that HE
be set free! Not to mention "Fortress Around Your Heart"... (OK, I won't
mention it.)

I digress...

Finally:

	>>>	The USENET top 78 album list <<<

First, the apologies/explanations:
Sorry that this took so long to get posted, but I did say that I would
post the results in the middle of September. I was delayed because the
system was down for a week and a half and I also had other work to do.
Only some of the following errors are mine. Hopefully there aren't many.
If someone didn't know the name of an album, and I didn't know it either,
then I left their comment. I think that I didn't lose anyone's list, but
  if I did, I'm sorry.

Second, the rating system:
I felt that an album that more than one person included in his/her top
ten list deserved more points than one that only one person included. So,
for albums that were in an order, I gave 20 points for 1st, 19 for 2nd,
and so on. Albums that received equal ratings split their points (so
for the people that refused to order their lists, everything received
  15.5 points).

Third, some explanations of what's being posted:
This posting only includes the albums that more than one person voted
for. I wasn't planning to post the albums that only got one vote, but
then I realized that people did spend effort compiling their lists, and
would like everyone to see the neat albums they included, so I will
post a separate list of albums that only received one vote. I may also
compile some sort of list of artists (probably one that doesnt' give
multiple points for someone who includes the same artist multiple times).
Finally, I'm still working on the collection of longer reviews, and will
mail it to the people who requested it when I'm finished. I will continue
to mail it to people who request it until I'm crazy or sick or bored.

The following list is in the form:
ranking) artist - album title - number of points

All of the top ten albums of that survey have been around long enough to
accumulate a "universal" appeal...Your request is somehow analogous to
saying that SysVRel2 is the "standard UNIX." (that is to say, it may
be some day, but not this week.)

The survey included old (60's) and recent popular music. If voters
thought that more recent music was better, they would have made
different choices. I think the outcome of this survey demonstrates
the *general* degeneration of popular music after the early 70's.

No, what it demonstrates is the *general* ossification of the critical
faculties of 95% of the non-deaf public.

Or, instead it could demonstrate once again how the general trend is for people
to latch on to certain periods in music and not really want to hear anything
else. I think it's unfortunate but, if radio is any monitor this seems to me a
pretty good assumption.--Let's face it, when it comes to musical tastes, most
people are reluctant to change.

Of course they're oldies! Didn't you see the title, "top 78 album list"?
78's haven't been produced in decades! Perhaps someone will now do a
"top 33-1/3 album list". :-)

You don't believe it Larry?? What would you do if I told you that I don't
even like Led Zep IV that much?? Why is The Wall "history's stupidest
concept album?? Because it's the true story of Roger Water's life?? Maybe
you don't like depressing music but I happen to thrive on it and I think
that the Wall is an incredible album. Possibly three Pink Floyd albums made it
because they are a highly technical group/ good late night music and I would
think a lot of people involved with Computers would be late night people.

You might be surprised to know Larry that every band I have ever asked about
on the net I have gotten a response to.(Including:Siouxsie/Banshees,
New Order, Hawkwind, Echo/Bunnymen, Joy Division etc.). I ask about these
bands because it's hard to find out any info on them from any US rock mags.
Just because you haven't heard of the bands doesn't mean that they don't
exist--or that others don't like them.

For your info Larry, I happen to own every Led Zep album BUT IV! I just don't
like the album that much--my favorite album by Zep is the first one.

bands like the Cure, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, Pink Floyd etc.

Obviously anything Mr. Palena doesn't know about (in his limited travels
through the Led Zeppelin section of his local record store) is garbage.
If "nobody" has ever heard of them, why do people respond to articles about
such artists in numbers? YOU haven't heard of them, and that bespeaks, not
the lower quality of the artist in question, but the lower level of knowledge
that you possess on the subject of music in general.

Of course, because it contradicted your holy personal taste. I think the
first five words of this last extract (alone, by themselves) sums up the
truth about you and your opinions, Palena.

Yes Rich, he did go thru a rather brutal divorce. I would have to agree
with you that the album is full of whiny depressing vocals but I still
love it. "Nobody Home" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I also
like the Wall for the incredible guitar work also--I've always been a fan
of Gilmour's searing minor key leads. I know a lot of people who agree with
you Rich but I like most whining/moaning vocals a lot (For eg., Joy Division
is my favorite band)

Why do you think I "quoted" it? (Given his previous opinions, it wouldn't
surprise me if Palena thought that Spinal Tap was a real band. He strikes
me as the type who would be impressed by amplifiers that go up to 11... )

It's one of mine, too. (Watch Palena flame us both for daring to mention a
band he's never heard of!) But Curtis expressed real emotional angst, and the
music's uniqueness of style and passion blended so well with what Curtis was
singing that to me it falls into a completely different arena of both
incredible originality and power.

Hear! Hear! I'm soooooooo sick of hearing Zeppelinians expressing their fervid
religious witness in public. I agree with P. Kirsch on Pink Floyd. None of the
Floyd are fantastic technical musicians, but they know how to use the skills
that they have. They take their time and do things right, and they put some
thought into what they do.
