Has anyone ported os9 to a Compupro (Viasyn) system with a CPU/68k board,
etc?

Hi,
I would like to be put on the os9 mailing list.
We have an os9/68000 system in a VME crate, and use
it for testing of FASTBUS, CAMAC and VME devices.
(FASTBUS and CAMAC are data aquisition systems in use
at high energy physics labs, such as CERN)

Microware's uMacs editor is based on Version 3.6 of MicroEmacs. uMacs
(pronounced micro-macs) comes standard in the Professional OS-9 package
or separately and is fully supported and documented by Microware. Contact
Microware for ordering details. (515) 224-1929 or sun!mcrware!mcrware.

uEmacs has indeed been ported to OS-9 (6809 and 68K, though my under-
standing is that uEmacs won't edit files that won't fit in memory, so
the 6809 version is rather limited in that respect). It's been placed
in the OS-9 Users Group software library, which can be downloaded from
CompuServe's OS-9 SIG DL area. There might also be some folks on
USENET who have it and might be able to get it to you. The Users Group
has been in flux recently, and their address has changed--I don't have
the new one at hand, I fear (that goes in the next message!).

MicroGnuEmacs 1a (mg) includes os9/68k support. I sent it to
mod.sources well over two months ago, I guess the backlog there is now
at least 3 months... I will not mail out all 650 kbytes of source
code. It is available on compuserve. (os9/68k section - was dl12,
but they have reorganized so it may be elsewhere)

I've heard that Profesional Os9/68k 2.0 includes microemacs 3.6!?
(3.8 is supposed to be in the mod.sources backlog, but to my knowlage
does not include os9/68k support.)

Would some kind soul please give me a quick & dirty comparison of OS-9 to
UNIX? I am ready to junk GemDos for my 520ST, & am either going to
get rid of the machine, or run either one of the UNIX or OS-9 shells that
are available for it. My understanding is that OS-9 is much like UNIX, only
it doesn't eat file space like UNIX. My prime questions are:
1)Does it support I/O redirection?
2)How well does it do at multi-tasking?
3)Is it easily modifiable?
4)How does one add new hardware to the kernal (if it has one)?

If there is anyone using a version of OS-9 for the ST, additional questions
are:
1)Would you buy it again?
2)Can you run standard release programs from it?
3)Does it have a telcom capablity?
4)Does it talk to the serial port?

If OS-9 is the mighty midget I've been lead to believe, why can't I find
any documentation on it in any publications?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

[MODERATOR RESPONSE TO ABOVE QUESTIONS: 1) YES. 2) WELL! 3) Yes. 4) Easily!
I have ported OS-9 to a number of systems with different hardware. The I/O
device drivers are written is assembler (mine were) and modular. I never
had the kernel sources and don't see a need for it in most cases.

I don't have the ST version of OS-9. I need an ST first... --- JDD]
