[mod.compilers] Query: FORTRAN compilers for UNIX

johnl@ima.UUCP (Compilers mailing list) (08/14/86)

Hello out there!

A friend of mine is about to acquire a system to do some serious number
crunching (e.g. lots of FFTs, etc.). One of his major requirements is that the
system support a HIGH QUALITY FORTRAN compiler (i.e. something at least as good
as the DEC FORTRAN optimizing compilers under VMS or RSX).

Hence: do any of you compiler experts know of a high quality FORTRAN compiler
which runs under UNIX?

Many Thanks..Yoram

P.S. Please reply directly to me; I'll send a summary to whomever requests one.

P.P.S. Yes, I know about f77, but that's not a serious compiler...
[I believe that DEC has ported the VMS compiler to run under Ultrix. Are there
any other good ones. I suppose it depends a lot on what Unix system you
have. -John]

Greenhill makes Fortran compilers for many unix systems and has a good
reputation. Also, Silicon Valley Systems (SVS) makes them for 68000 and
32016 systems. I have used the SVS Fortran on a 32016 system. Seemed pretty
good but it had a lousy interface to code written in C (had to write an
assembly language "wrapper" around my routines written in C).
