[mod.compilers] Request for Optimizing C Compiler Benchmark Programs

johnl@ima.UUCP (02/20/87)

Hello. What programs do people use to benchmark optimizing C compilers?
What sort of percent speed improvement is thought to be good?

If you mail to me, I'll summarize to the group. Thanks!

[I usually ran the C compiler through itself, or some other real program.
The degree of speed improvement depends on the optimizations. If you're
just adding a peepholer, 10% is OK. If you're going from a real dumb
generation scheme to a real smart one, you might get a factor of five or more.
Informed speculation welcome, as always -John]
