I thank all the persons who responded to my inquiry about a PL/1 compiler for Xenix. My original request was not specific enough. What we were looking for was a PL/1 compiler for a 80286 based machine under any operating system that will support eight terminal users at the same time. The responses all mentioned only two products: 1. a DOS PL/1 compiler for the PC from Digital Research 2. a UNIX PL/1 compiler for 68000/68020 and WECO 32100 based machines that will be released for Xenix 80386 machines in May 1987 by LPI. The DOS system compiler doesn't meet the multiple terminal user requirement and the LPI compiler will not run on an 80286 machine. My boss was told in a telephone conversation with an LPI representative that LPI is not planning to come out with a PL/1 compiler for the 80286 because that chip's architecture presents too many problems. We can't use an 80386 machine because this project involves 400 machines. The cost difference between 400 80286 machines and 400 80386 machines is staggering. So it looks like we will be converting the PL/1 code and the existing database to C.
