To everyone on the net: This is in answer to the many flames that I received about recent duplicated postings. The reason behind this is very simple and I would like to explain what happened. As some of you are no doubt aware there is a link between the net.sf-lovers newsgroup and the SF-LOVERS digest on the ARPAnet. This link has been in existence for roughly eight years and is mostly transparent to all the people on both networks. The way the link works is that all messages sent by you folks to net.sf-lovers are automatically sent to me for inclusion into the digest on the ARPAnet. In the same fashion, messages sent to me from the ARPAnet are automatically sent to the net.sf-lovers newsgroups. All of this magic happens between two machines here at Rutgers - RED (ARPAnet) and TOPAZ (USEnet). Recently TOPAZ was down for some software work and when it was brought back up there was something wrong with the connection such that messages where not being passed back and forth between systems. I now had well over 100 messages that were waiting to be put into the digest for distribution over the ARPAnet. At this point I had no indication of how many of these had made it to all the sites we talked to from TOPAZ on the USEnet nor which ones had never made it from the ARPAnet to the USEnet. The only way to resolve this and keep the flow of discussion running between the two groups was (in my judgement) to resend all of the messages in the queue back out over to net.sf-lovers. This resulted in many people seeing duplicate postings of messages (those that had already reached some sites) and all of them had my name attached to them as the sender. If one looks closely however you will not that the original people's names are still there. I hope you all now understand what happened and why it happened. There is no need to send flames of any sort including the few nasty messages I have already received (you know who you are). If anyone was inconvenienced or upset by this, I apologize.

< I can use my magic to change the color to red -- but I don't do windows. > I for one appreciate Saul Jaffe's efforts to tie Usenet and ARPAnet. It's worth the occasional (<1/year) flood. Saul, your apology is accepted. And, thanks. @begin(pun) Of course, if this was distributed on microform instead of electronically, I might be able to say, "Thanks for all the fiche." @end(pun) -- -Paul S. R. Chisholm The above opinions are my own, {pegasus,vax135}!lzwi!psc not necessarily those of any {mtgzz,ihnp4}!lznv!psc telecommunications company. (*sigh* ihnp4!lzwi!psc does *NOT* work!!! Use above paths.) "It must be fast, and it must be red, and it must have windows."
