[ont.sf-lovers] tentative Ontario SF group

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (11/20/85)

Since there is local interest in a science fiction newsgroup, and much of
Ontario no longer gets net.sf-lovers due to the utzoo newsgroup cuts, I
have tentatively created ont.sf-lovers. The ont groups are sketchy enough
that we don't really have any obvious place to hold a temporary discussion
to assess traffic volume, and in any case I don't think we need to be as
formal about local newsgroups as for the netwide groups. I suggest that
in three months or so, the usefulness of ont.sf-lovers should be reassessed;
I will raise the issue then if nobody else does.

Well, to start off a discussion, just to see how many people are
reading this group at all, I'll start by just asking if anyone knows
anything about Heinlein's latest book? The one *after* "Job" which
itself just came out in paperback. I'm hoping everyone who reads
this at all will post something on this question or *any* other,
just so we can see how many people sign up at all.

                                    Cheers! -- Jim O.

It came out after "Job"??? What's it called...I wanna read it.

I found Job (what was the exact title? I read it about 5 months ago) to
be written in the same later-years Heinlein style: very tongue-in-cheekish,
very anti-establishment, very keen on sex, etc etc. Did I enjoy it?
Well, yes, I guess I did (wait...here it comes...) but it seemed to fit
in well with most of his later books (Time Enough for Love, etc).

Ok....I'm a SF fan, I live in Ontariariario, and I'm sure there are more
than 3 of us. Anybody know if there are any new SF movies scheduled for
release at Xmas???

I have just seen the ads for Heinlein's new book.
I sure hope it is as good as Friday (that is, better than
Job or The Number of the Beast).

Although this has nothing to do with SF, has anyone
gotten the November issue of Astronomy? My subscription ran out
and I didn't renew because they had my new address for 6 monthes
and still wanted to send to the old address! The bookstores up here
(Yonge + Eglinton) haven't gotten it it yet. With Halley's visible
sometime this month I was looking forward to this issue.

I don't really have anything to add myself to the discussion of
Heinlein's THE CAT WHO COULD WALK THROUGH walls, but I happened
to be at Bakka, the Toronto SF specialty store, and overheard
a debate on the books merits between Hugo-winner Mike Glicksohn
and the lovely manager of the store, Naiomi Kane. Both seemed
to feel it was a disappointment, but, as Ford Prefect would say,
Glicksohn doubly so.

    Heinlein's newest book is called:
_The Cat Who Walks Through Walls: A Comedy of Manners_ [1985]

A Special Plea:
---------------
Please let's not let this newsgroup degenerate to the level of
net.sf-lovers. Just because the phone bills will be less will not
make it any more tiresome to read (or rather not read). The author
of the article to which i am replying asked for a species of roll-call
by having everyone reading the group respond with the title - this
is fine as a mechanism for counting heads but sets a bad precedent.
It's irritating to read dozens of replies giving some book's title
as a response to someone's request for information. Please mail and
let the requester summarize to the net.
    Yours for a saner net.

Ahem, folks, please edit the ",ont.uucp" *out* of the headers when posting
contributions to ont.sf-lovers as followups. ont.uucp is not the right
place for discussion of Heinlein's books.
