ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPENINGS IN THE
APPLIED MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH PROGRAM
OFFICE OF ENERGY RESEARCH
DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

DOE's Applied Mathematical Sciences (AMS) research program currently has
three positions - one permanent, two temporary (one or two years) - for
research level personnel in applied mathematics, computer science, or
related fields.

The AMS research program consists of two components:  the basic research
program in mathematical and computational sciences, supporting research
at universities and the DOE national laboratories (FY 1986 budget
currently is $23.8 million); and the Energy Research Supercomputer
Network (ERSN) supporting supercomputer access (FY 1986 budget currently
is $15.3 million).

Duties in the research program include reviewing unsolicited research
proposals, research program planning and documentation, coordination
with other government research agencies and congressional staff, and
allows time for continuation of current research activities.

Duties in the ERSN include managing a nationwide network of
supercomputers, with major sites at Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory and Florida State University, planning an advanced software
development program, reviewing proposals for supercomputer access from
OER researchers, technical liaison with other government agencies,
budget planning, documentation, and oversight.

The permanent position is at the GS-14 or GS-15 level ($44,430 -
$67,940).

Intergovernmental Personnel ACT (IPA) position: current salary, 1-2 year
term.  This position provides for university faculty to work in the
government while on leave from the university.  DOE pays full current
salary, travel expenses, and either a one-year per diem or moving
expenses.

Temporary Detail:  current salary, 1-2 year term.
This assignment provides for national laboratory staff to work at DOE
providing technical advice and assistance while on leave from the
laboratory.  Current salary, travel expenses and per diem are provided
as determined by laboratory policy.

Duty station is at DOE Headquarters, Germantown, Maryland.
