[net.music] Bauhaus

Bauhaus - I always thought that was one of the best names that any
rock or punk group came up with (right up there with De Peche Mode).

I have the EP 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' - an excellent piece of music.
The tone of the song is very ominous and moody. Instrumentally, this song
is very sparse, adding to the darkness and despair. I think these guys
must have influenced a lot of the 'negative' sounds in the punk scene.
Groups like 'Sisters of Mercy' and perhaps 'Joy Division'. I think that
Bauhaus is now defunct, due to the suicide of one of its members, but I'm
not totally positive about that.

My brother has the EP 'Bauhaus - the Singles 1981-3', which I've been
meaning to listen to. Maybe, I'll give it a chance this weekend. And,
if I remember, I'll let you know what it's like.

Don't forget that Bauhaus is featured in the opening scene (and credits)
of the movie "The Hunger" that made it to cable recently.

btw, it's Depeche Mode and just how do you pronounce it?

  Day Pesh Mode
De Pesh Mode -- I think this one's correct
Day Peshay Mode -- en francais n'est pas?

Perhaps Sisters Of Mercy, definitely not Joy Division. Joy Division, along
with PiL ("ANNALISA! ANNALISA!") defined the postpunk sound.

It is not correct to speculate that Bauhaus might have
influenced Joy Division (one of my fave ravs). I believe that Joy Division
was recording quite awhile before Bauhaus. On a tangent, New Order is an
example of a good project (Joy Division) gone bad. But what can you expect
when the driving force of the band does away with himself?

i am not a real fan of Bauhaus but i am a fan of one of the members.
David Jay made an album after the breakup of Bauhaus called "the etiquette
of violence" which i HIGHLY recommend. all instruments are played by david
j including an acoustic guitar instead of an electric one. it is very
different music from that of Bauhaus. i believe you can only find it as an
import on situation 2 records.

as far as Bauhaus goes, i recommend the song "she's in parties."

I've got several of their albums, "The Sky's Gone Out", "Mask", and
"Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape" (a live album), as well as an
E.P., "4 A.D." PtEaGMtT has "Dark Entries", "In the Flatfield", and
"Bela Lugosi's Dead". TSGO has a song written by Brian Eno, "Third
Uncle". I like them all quite a bit.
