PLEASE POST October 21, 1985 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA USER SERVICE LIBRARIAN/AHMANSON FOUNDATION GRANT INQUIRE AT: University Library Personnel Office LOCATION: University Library Administration, Doheny Memorial Library DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports to the Senior User Access Librarian under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Automation; serves as a member of the Ahmanson project team. The Ahmanson Foundation has provided funds for the establishment of computer-equipped library satellite facilities in which students will have electronic access to local, regional, national and international bibliographic information. These microcomputer-based facilities will also give students access to instructional software supporting undergraduate and graduate teaching and research activities. Full-text data files will also be available through the system. The three-year Ahmanson Project will expand access to traditional library materials as well as making microcomputer instructional software readily available for regular, developmental and remedial needs. Incumbent in this position will be responsible for defining user requirements; developing and maintaining public service points, including supervision and training of on-site student consultants; providing direct assistance to user, including in-person and telephone contact; writing manuals and instructional materials; training users; and evaluating software and hardware and making acquisition recommendations. The USC library is a major research library in the process of expanding its staff and collections. It holds 2.3 million volumes, and is currently engaged in a major fund-raising program for the improvement of its collections, physical facilities, staff, and innovative automation programs. The library is a member of the Assocation of Research Libraries and the Research Libraries Group. It employs an automated circulation system and is implementing an automated acquisitions program and an online catalog. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; experience in a public service or library instruction capacity in a college or university library system; experience with microcomputers in a college or university setting; strong writing and verbal communication skills; and experience in planning and presenting training programs. Preference given to candidates with experience in training staff or the public to use a library automation system. Programming experience (e.g., BASIC, PILOT, FORTRAN) preferred. RANK: Librarian I or II, on the continuing appointment track. SALARY: Minimum starting salary is $21,000, but is negotiable on the basis of experience.
