              ACM CONFERENCE ON THE
            HISTORY OF PERSONAL WORKSTATIONS
                       January 9-10, 1986
                       Hyatt Rickeys
                       Palo Alto, California
This is the first in a series of ACM sponsored conferences focusing on the
"History of Computing." The History of Personal Workstations Conference
will explore the major events that influenced and led to one of the most fundamental
aspects of modern computing - the personal workstation. The Conference will
bring together, for the first time, those pioneers in the computer field whose
vision and work shaped the concepts behind modern personal workstations.
The History of Personal Workstations Conference is being sponsored by the
Association for Computing Machinery through its Pacific Region and hosted
by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. The Conference will explore important
areas such as computer networks, distributed computing, specialized workstation
environments, and programming environments that have shaped the history of,
and led to, the modern workstation. Pioneering researchers in these areas will
present the vision they had at the start of their work reflect on the impact their
work has had, and discuss the potential for impact in the future.
The History of Personal Workstations Conference represents a unique opportunity
to understand the events that hae led to modern distributed computing and
personal workstations. Bringing together the architects and pioneers of the
fundamental ideas behind modern workstations should be a memorable experience.
