The Computer Science Department at the University of Utah reports with great sorrow the passing of Prof. Elliott I. Organick on December 21, after many years of struggle against leukemia. Elliott will long be remembered for his dedication to Computer Science teaching, instructional writing, professional service, and research. Originally educated as a Chemical Engineer, Elliott redirected his energies to Computer Science beginning in 1963, at the University of Houston. He served fourteen years as Professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah. Deeply committed to good expository writing in Computer Science, Elliott served as Editor of Computing Surveys for five years during its formative period. He was the author of 19 books, among which were volumes translated into five foreign languages. In his last few years, Elliott gave his maximum energy toward capping his career with a lasting research contribution. He saw a way to do this through the application of object-oriented programming language concepts and tools to the design of special function architectures. He continued this work until the end, recently working with a student to design, fabricate, and test an Ada- specified FFT butterfly chip. Elliott's widow, Betty, suggests that anyone wishing to make a donation in his name may do so to the Elliott I. Organick Memorial Fund, Congregation Kol Ami, 2425 East 2760 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. Messages of condolence may be sent to Betty at 1267 Second Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103. -------
