The following is intended for maximum distribution posting. Job Title: Senior Software Engineer Department: Center for Arts & Technology, English Carnegie-Mellon Univ. Description This position involves developing educational and application tools for facilitating the process of writing, including tools for gathering, analyzing and interpreting textual information; planning, organizing, and revising text. Duties will include (1) participating in the overall system design and specification with principal investigators; (2) formulating system and program specifications to meet the objectives of new and revised systems; (3) preparing data collection and analysis tools and debugging tests to assure optimum effectiveness and reliability; (4) deciding the best methodology for achieving functional, cost and performance goals; (5) writing module descriptions and programmer documentation; and (6) supervising the work of other programmers. The application development context is an advanced function workstation running the software environment ANDREW, developed at the Information Technology Center (a joint project of Carnegie-Mellon and IBM). ANDREW mainly consists of graphical window manager support and virtual file service, and is implemented as an extension to 4.2 BSD UNIX. Qualifications Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of software engineering and computer system programming techniques typically gained through an M.S. degree in computer science, math, or electrical engineering with computer science concentration, or 6 years relevant experience with the development of large systems. Candidates should also know the Unix operating system and be proficient in C. Experience with text-editor, hypertext and data base programming, and with human factors in advanced workstation graphics design is desirable. Send Resumes to David S.
