Applications are solicited for positions of Research Programmer and Research Engineer in the Warp project at Carnegie Mellon University. Several positions are available: (1) Applications programmers, who will develop libraries of vision algorithms to run on the Warp machine, and work with members of the autonomous land vehicles project in developing robot navigation algorithms to run on the Warp machine; (2) Engineers to maintain the two Warp machines currently in existence, and help test and install new machines as they are built; (3) Programmers to help maintain and develop the W2 compiler. Warp is a new systolic array machine with a baseline performance of 100 MFLOPS, organized in a linear array of ten cells. The machine has applications in image processing, path planning, and scientific computation. An important feature of this machine is that a high degree of programmability is provided by the W2 programming language. Two prototypes of these machines have been built, and several more are being constructed. The succesful applicant will become a member of the Warp project, and gain the opportunity to contribute to the development of ideas in the design and programming of advanced computer architectures. The computing environment provided for this research is highly adequate, and includes Vaxes, Suns, Daisys, and various other workstations. The personal environment in the Department of Computer Science is very open and friendly, allowing intellectual growth through exposure to the many different areas of high-quality research being pursued.
