is seeking a
Computing Support Manager
(Computing Resource Manager II)
The Department of Information and Computer Science of the
University of California, Irvine, is seeking candidates for the
position of Computing Support Manager. The Department is
research-oriented, with 20 faculty and approximately 90 graduate
students. There are active research groups in the areas of
architecture and operating systems, artificial intelligence and
machine learning, software engineering and programming
environments, social and managerial analysis of computing, and
data structures and algorithms. A National Science Foundation
Coordinated Experimental Research grant (5 years, $3.1 million)
will begin this year to support the development of "A Laboratory
for Software Research." This grant and other funds will support
considerable growth of the Department's computing resources for
the foreseeable future. UCI is located in Orange County, three
miles from the Pacific Ocean near Newport Beach, and
approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. If you

The computing environment is built on 4.2 BSD Unix machines,
including a Sequent B8K multiprocessor, DEC VAX 750s, and Sun3,
Sun2, and Integrated Solutions workstations. These machines are
linked by a local Ethernet and connected to the ARPA/Internet.
The computing base will expand significantly over the next 3
years, starting with an additional Sequent B21K multiprocessor
and 20 Sun3s now on order. Additional undergraduate
instructional resources include microcomputer labs (several
hundred IBM-PC and MacIntosh class machines) and HP System V Unix
machines. The computing support staff currently includes 7
professionals, a secretary, and several student workers.
DUTIES: Manage the development and maintenance of networks,
systems and applications software, and computing operations for
the Department. Plan the physical, staffing, and budget
requirements. Plan and manage significant equipment
acquisitions, and participate in long-term planning. Represent
ICS in interactions with other campus or industry organizations.
Manage the Support staff, including recruitment, training and
supervision.
REQUIREMENTS: PhD in Computer Science/related field, or
equivalent experience. Computing management experience,
preferably in a University setting. Knowledge of Berkeley Unix
operating system; computer market and vendors, computer
networking and data communication issues; algorithm design,
programming languages, and software engineering standards.
SALARY: $44,900 - 56,200/annually, depending upon experience.
