The Department of Computer Science at Stanford University is seeking a
Computer Facilities Director with a strong technical background to manage
a staff of programmers, engineers and students engaged in the development
and maintenance of the department's primary facilities in support of research.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Management of ten staff programmers, engineers, technicians and students
    engaged in the development and maintnenance of software and hardware in
    support of departmental research; personnel development planning.
Facilities management of DECSystems 10 and 20, VAX 750s and 780 running Unix,
    20 workstations made by Sun and others and the ethernet connections
    among these and to other systems on campus.
Budget development, rate setting for cost centers and financial control;
    provides technical input and cost estimates needed for research contract
    and grant proposals.
Sound decision making to balance technical, financial, academic and political
    considerations; provides expertise to University committees doing
    planning for networks and other shared computational resources.

Qualifications:
    Must have good management skills and a strong technical background.
Five to ten years experience with relevant computing systems expected,
including experience in managing complex projects involving both hardware
and software.  A good background in computer science and engineering is
required, including a working knowledge of several different computer
systems and programming languages.  A knowledge of modern computer
networking in diverse architectures is required, as is the ability to
evaluate proposed novel architectures.

An advanced degree in one of the sciences or equivalent experience is
required.  Experience in an academic environment helpful.  The ability to
work with an unusual mix of people, at times under pressure, is essential.
The ability to work irregular hours in response to an emergency is
required.
