Subject: Pulsed neutron source?
From: rimey at dali.berkeley.edu (Ken Rimey)
In the draft paper posted by Herb Lin, the use of pulses of neutrons was
suggested for the sensing of fissionable material. Can anyone explain
how a pulsed neutron source might be made?
An example of a pulsed neutron source is a tube filled with deuterium
and tritium. When a pulse of neutrons is desired, a strong spark is
ignited in the tube, thereby inducing a small amount of fusion.
D + T --> He + n is the reaction, and the n that result are the
neutrons in the pulse.
