I just called 212-555-1212 to get a number in Manhattan. When the recording with the number was played, it included area code 212.

The reason for this is that parts of New York City, formerly in area code 212, are now in area code 718. I'm sure they include the area code in the reply to avoid confusion. I would also not be surprised to learn that you can get 212 numbers from 718, and vice versa.
