One reason is that in the new 508 area, all long distance calls require 1+. In the remaining 617 area code, most of the calls are local. Also, the 508 code still has alot of Step and Crossbar equipment, and the 617 area code is likely to be all-electronic (or at least mostly so) by that time. The introduction of N1X and N0X prefixes is easier in the 617 area code, and probably won't be needed in the 508 code. That's my 2c. -------
