This was "Quatermass And The Pit" (or 5,000,000 miles to Earth or somesuch title in the USofA); the third in the series of Quatermass stories written by Nigel Kneale. The spacecraft was in the London Underground station called "Hobb's End" .. the film revealed that "Hobb" was another name for the Devil. I was going to spoil the film, but I won't. Its one of my favourites!
