We have written a graphics output program for the epson JX80 color printer
(which Epson has since canceled) that produces horizontal or vertical color
prints from a Sun 3 raster file. The program also will work with the QMS KISS
laser printer or other epson compatable by removing the color selection codes.

The program is fairly small and illustrates byte encoding of raster image
files with aspect ratio correction and color balancing on a 1280x900 image
with 3 - 5 levels of RGB.

If you would pass this on to Chris and see if it is still needed, I'll send
the source. I'll need a better address though, preferably relative to mcvax.

Subject: Sun100U Videofix Rev A

A while back I posted a suggested fix for an early Sun 100 video problem
(horizontal glitches) and suggested the replacement of 5 components on the
video deflection PCBA. Two of those components were either out of production
or difficult to come by.

C413, a 2.2uF, 100V, AL Electrolytic capacitor, rated @ 105 degrees C,
is manufactured by, and sold thru distributors of, Elna.

CR406 can be replaced by Amperex diode BYV 96D. Between its cathode and the
hole on the PCBA where the cathode enters, install R541, a 33 ohm half watt
resistor.

There are other video problems (such as warped vertical) whose solutions
are yet to be found.

Just let me note that in addition to the many sympathetic mail messages to
sun-spots about my comment, I got lots of direct mail from people who were
glad I spoke up. Only one person, a person on sun-spots, said they don't mind
trashing their disks every new Sun release.

I posted some sources for program I wrote to manipulate icons (i.e. trim,
move, show) and a program to show arbitrary sized pixrects using a window.
I thought some of the people who read this group would like a pointer.

Subject: RPCs

Someone here wants to do RPCs between a Sun and a Xerox 1186 Lisp machine
(don't ask why). 1186s use Xerox's Courier RPC protocol, which others tell
me is the same protocol implemented in 4.3BSD.

Two questions:
1)	Does 4.3 BSD actually implement Courier; and
2)	if so, has anyone implemented Courier on a Sun,
so as to talk to a VAX??

Any info on this subject would be appreciated.

Subject: SUN3 as a multiuser number cruncher

I am new to Sun Spots. We are thinking of purchasing a SUN-3 (with 8
MBs, FPA, 16-channel multiplexer, and 260MB disk). I must meet the
needs of 5 groups of CPU-and-RAM-hungry users. The new system will
partially off-load an oversubscribed vax 11/780 which belongs to a
larger community. Some of our programs occupy 2-3 MBs of main memory
and run for 0.5 to several CPU-hours on the vax.

Does anyone out there have experience using a Sun-3 as a multiuser
number cruncher? Can this be done on a Sun-3? Can this be done in the
absence of a batch queue? I would appreciate your advice and wisdom.

(As you may have gathered, our budget is limited, and I do not yet have
experience with either Sun or unix.)

Subject: 56kb on sun?

We want to be able to do network backboning using suns. The network
communication is 56kb DDS lines. We would like a Sun to be able
to handle four of these. Naturally, hardware support is essential.
Does anyone have knowledge of hardware we could use? Does the
Sun DMA rs-232 8 line card hold in promise for this application?
Thanks for any help.

Subject: using dump over a network - help!

We have three Sun2's in our office and only one cartridge tape drive. My
problem is that I can't seem to get a remote dump to work over the Ethernet
if the filesystem takes up more than one tape. The dump aborts with an error
at the end of the first tape and my choices are to abort or restart (neither
of which is appropriate). If you have any suggestions of the magic words I
should mumble to get this to work, please let me know! BTW, if it makes any
difference, we are running Sun Unix 1.4. Thanks in advance for any help you
can provide.

Subject: Upgrade 3.0pilot->3.0

I had major problems trying to upgrade 2 Sun3/160's from 3.0pilot to
3.0final, due to the miniroot vmunix crashing with "Bus Error" during
the execution of "setup", where it was making the filesystems.

It seemed that the disk partition sizes could have something to do with
it, at first; though what eventually worked for one Sun did not work for
the other.

Has anyone else come across such problems?

Subject: Sun color screendumps

We are looking for the software required to dump our Sun 3/160 color
monitor (Sun-Unix 3.0) to an Imagen 8/300 laser printer.
We got some programs from Robert Jacob at NRL, but they don't work
with our color monitor (complains about bad header information).
