[mod.computers.laser-printers] New Unix TeX device drivers

furuta@MIMSY.UMD.EDU (11/22/85)

I am happy to announce that we have added two new dvi device drivers to the
Unix TeX distribution tape.

dvi2ps is a driver from dvi to the Apple LaserWriter. It was originally
created by Neal Holtz of Carelton University through modification of the
(primitive) Sun previewer already on the TeX tape. It was subsequently
modified at MIT by Scott Jones and Chris Lindblad. In addition to being on
the tape, it may be ftp-ed from Washington in <tex.xfer>dvi2ps.sh. This is
a shell script so no special ftp modes are needed. I'll post it to the
Usenet as well (in this group). The character positioning algorithm used in
dvi2ps seems to still need slight adjustment. dvi2ps is at version 2.10,
with the modifications that I have mentioned.

dvi2qms is a new device driver written by Chris Lindblad of MIT. To quote
Scott Jones, "dvi2qms was written ... after we decided the existent dvi->qms
filters were not acceptable." This can be ftp-ed from Washington in
<tex.xfer>dvi2qms.sh. Again, no special ftp modes are required and this
also will be posted to the Usenet.

If you want to get the TeX distribution tape (which contains these drivers
now), contact Pierre MacKay at the University of Washington. His Internet
address is MacKay@Washington. From Usenet, he's uw-beaver!uw-june!mackay.

Scott Jones (saj@mit-prep) has also written Symbolics lisp machine screen
dump programs for the LN01S, QMS printers, and PostScript printers. Contact
him directly if you are interested in these.
