hi! I am hoping someone out there can help... We are contemplating the purchase of a new printer (or printers) to replace our current line printers. We are hoping for something that can provide the same service as the line printers do now, printouts for students, as well as better quality printing for student papers and plots. We just got a few Apple LaserWriters, but they really aren't designed for massive use, so we would prefer to use them in sheltered areas, like the office. The two printers we are looking at so far are the Printronix LaserPrint 20 and the DataProducts LZR2610. I understand that DataProducts is suppossed to have a PostScript printer out soon. Since we already have transcript (for the LaserWriters) this would be very convinient. Does anyone out there know anything about these printers, or perhaps of anything else that could meet our needs? I realize the information i have provided is a bit sketchy, but that's all my boss told me... thanks for the help, david ps: since this is probably already been discussed, you can just send mail directly... i'll summarize if anyone asks. [[Editor's note: This has indeed been asked before but I don't recall seeing a good summary yet. One would be appreciated. --Rick]]

We evaluated both the Printronix LaserPrint 20 and the DataProducts 2600. We found the Printronix to be completely unsatifsactory. We were one of the first sites to evaluate the unit. The main problems with the Printronix were: 1. The technology used is cold fusion rather than heat fusion, so the toner does not stay on the page very well. It smears easily and comes off if you run it through a photocopier a few times. 2. The 1500 sheet paper feeder (an option) constantly jams. The DataProducts printer was much better. Our only hesitation was that controller we were looking at had some bugs. We ended up buying a QMS 2400. Good luck. John Pew Silicon Compilers ...{weitek,decwrl,turtlevax}!sci!johnp
