At the Knowledge Systems Lab at Stanford (KSL) we have 6 Imagen printers on the ethernet (used to be 7, but retired an old Imprint-10 just last night): 2 8/300's and 4 12/300's. The Imprint-10 used to be on a 9600 baud line and once we tried it on the ethernet we wouldn't ever consider going back. The throughput is much better--with the ethernet we can drive these printers at approaching 100% duty. Printer availability isn't tied to any one host's being up. We never have to pull twisted pair for ethernet devices. We plug something in (we use TCL transceivers) and it goes. We move things a lot, too. It should be noted that we're heavily ethernet oriented with over 100 hosts (mostly Xerox & TI lisp machines) on 6 private nets gatewayed to each other and to the other ~25 connected ethernets at Stanford. We also have two Xerox laser printers on our ethernets and will shortly have an Apple Laser Writer on an Applenet gatewayed to the ethernet via a SEAGATE. --Christopher -------
