[mod.computers.laser-printers] JES2 external writer and X2700 conversion

laser-lovers@ucbvax.UUCP (02/04/86)

We are running MVS on an IBM mainframe with JES2, and have
connected a XEROX 2700 laserprinter as a 3780 remote station.
Together with a program that converts overprinting with the
same character or with an underscore into resp. "bold" or
"underline" mode, we have it emulating a lineprinter for standard
list files.

We are now looking for an external SYSOUT writer that takes
the function of this conversion program.
The user would simply create a SYSOUT dataset with DEST=LASER
and a FORMS code to indicate the appropriate font setup and
conversion. This external writer will in the near future also
accomodate other output devices e.g. the IBM 6670, bold and
sideways elite (SWEL) for the 3800.
The main purpose is taking device dependencies for standard list
output from the user, making laserprinters look like lineprinters,
which at the moment they don't.

Since we are using Waterloo SCRIPT that creates device control codes,
it must be possible to pass this along in transparent mode.
At the moment we write a PUNCH file to the printer, but the separator
page comes out clobbered. This could be fixed in an external writer.

Has anyone created such a external writer or ever heard of it?
Can this be done with conventional programs e.g. TSPRINT?
We have some ideas on the matter and if no suitable programs are
found we will implement our own. If you have suggestions or are
interested in obtaining the results, please let me know.
