Experimenting with the HP LaserJet Plus reveals that the old "error 21" (scan conversion unable to keep up with paper motion) still occurs; the firmware upgrade from the vanilla LaserJet hasn't improved conversion speed any. Some tinkering with simple downloaded fonts suggests that the limit on density of plain old characters is somewhere in the vicinity of 2300 characters per vertical inch of paper. It's undoubtedly somewhat variable depending on the details; 2300 is with fixed-pitch downloaded fonts printing solid blocks of characters produced by a printer-test-pattern generator.
