I have hacked on TeX macro packages for some time now and consider myself somewhat of a TeXpert; however, there is one question I have not found a solution to in The TeXbook. Is there any way to absolutely address a point on the page? Are there any registers you can interrogate to find out where you are on the page? If not, why? For example, in troff you can specify that you want to go to an absolute position from the top of the page. I have always used \hboxes and \vboxes to position my text, but there are times when absolute addressing would be useful.
