[mod.computers.laser-printers] Mac, Sun sharing LaserWriter?

cperry@MITRE.ARPA.UUCP (05/20/86)

Joel,

A friend of mine tells me that the Sun LaserWriter is functionally
equivalent to an Apple LaserWriter, in that both are Canon engines
running PostScript. The difference is that the Sun version connects
through a slow (compared to an Appletalk or Ethernet connection)
SIO port on the Sun.

[[Editor's note: My understanding is that the two LaserWriters are
the same machine and that if you peel off the Sun logo you'll find an
apple. the distinction is that the Sun uses the RS-232 connection and
the Apple the AppleTalk, both of which are on the machine.	--Rick ]]

Regarding the Sun-Appletalk link, I assume you're already familiar with
the existing Seagate/Kinetics products or that, by this time, somebody
else has let you on to them.

We're trying to get TeX/LaTeX to work with filters over our Sun
Ethernet to pass MacDraw files converted to impress format for
our Imagen 8/300. So far no luck, but I'd be intersted in any
thing you hear that might help us.

[[Editor's note: Such a filter for the Imagen machine would certainly
be of interest to many. --Rick]]

Hope this helps.

Chris

Does anyone know a way for a Sun (3/160c) and a Mac to share
    an Apple LaserWriter?

I assume one way would be to put the Sun on AppleTalk. Any information
on vendors, prices, availability (vaporware vs. beta release vs.
actual product), etc. of Sun-to-AppleTalk adapters would be appreciated.
(Since we might get a Masscomp (68020-series) instead, I'd be curious to
know if the above would work with it, as well.)
There is a box from Kinetics (look in any MacUser or MacWorld - especially this
months issue) that puts the Mac on Ethernet. This might be the best approach.
The alternative seems to be ship the PostScript from the Mac (using Cmd-F)
to the Sun and then let the Sun worry about transfering it.
