[mod.computers.laser-printers] Various dumb questions about laserwriters

mrose@nrtc-gremlin.UUCP (07/03/86)

We've decided to take the jump and start buying some laserwriters,
so I thought I'd ask an expert on the list to clue me in on the
    details.

We're running with Imagen laser printers now, and run mostly LaTeX,
TeX, line printer emulation, and troff. Occasionally we do some tek
emulation and some bitmaps. Our major host system is 4.2bsd unix
using the berkeley spooling system. We have a strict policy that
any laser printers we buy have to go on an ethernet and speak
tcp/ip. The biggest enhancement we've made to the imagen stuff is
support for Tim Morgan's tpic graphics primitives.

I've read the postscript stuff and I'm sold on it, so now I need to
    know:

	- what vendors are people having good luck with:
		supplying equipment, maintenance, software support

	- what exactly do you need to put a laserwriter on the ethernet
	  with tcp/ip

	- where's the best software around (dvi2ps is a must, troff
support would also be good, etc.)

	- does anyone have support in a postscript driver for the tpic
	  primitives

	- does anyone have the software interfaced to the berkeley
	  spooling system

Thanks in advance,
