[Moderator: I don't follow the news groups that closely so if you'd let me know how, I'll forward this code to Washington] [[Editor's note: We already have equivalent code, I believe---if not the same code. You can get it by anonymous ftp from Washington in <tex.xfer>dvi2ps.sh. For those of you without Internet access, it's on the current Unix TeX distribution tape. For information on purchasing that, contact Pierre MacKay, MacKay@washington. --Rick ]] A recent request by Per Westerland@chalmers.UUCP asked about forms of dvi2ps using GF fonts. We have been running a modified version of dvi2ps here are Stanford that uses GF fonts for sometime. It doesn't do anything fancy, simply converts the GF format into pixel format and uses the orginal tex.pro (tex.ps) file as is. After looking at the possibility of converting to somekind of run length encoding in the PostScript file itself I decided the advantages weren't there (at least for us). It didn't appear that PostScript could get as much of an advantage out of the encoding and in addition it would slow the printer down as it converted each character on the fly. I never actually tried it however. Ernest Wood Center for Integrated Systems wood@cascade.stanford.edu {ucbvax, decvax}!decwrl!glacier!wood
